PER Registrations

RECORD AND TRACK
PEOPLE, EVENTS & REGISTRATIONS | WEB REGISTRATION | DOWNLOADS | USER EXPERIENCES

PER Registrations is a Filemaker-based system for managing event registrations for organizations needing an offline desktop solution.

It's well-suited for conference and special-event organizers, seminar/workshop organizations, professional development planners, schools, community centres – anyone who needs to record, track and inform participants in registration-based activities.

| Click-and-go updates

From the outset the ability to easily move PER data into a revised structure was a key concept. Plainly there was no value to rolling feature improvements if users couldn't easily update to them.

Update All buttonUpdating to a new version requires simply that you add the word “DATA” [all caps, no spaces] to the front of your existing Registrations file – making it DATARegistrations.PER – then move the new Registrations.PER file into your folder.

Launch the revised version, then click the Update All button on the Set-up page. You will get a confirmation after the file is updated.

The update also properly resets auto-entered serial numbers to avoid duplicates and ensure relationship integrity.

| Terms of sales and licences

“Power” is statistically the most overused word in computer and software marketing, probably because it's so subjective. Don't trust anyone's marketing bumpf, not even what you read here. This is why fully functional trial versions of PER are available for download. In case of discrepency between the software and claims made here, the software prevails. Please draw the error to our attention.

Other than a 100-record cap, what you see in the evaluation version includes all features in the licensed version. Try setting up events you are planning, create people – no, Lee Labrador is not a human – and register them for your events. Check the resulting print and email reports. After a careful examination, decide whether it meets your organization's needs.

This is the long, drawn out way of saying that, in most cases, sales are final because you have had a good chance to fairly evaluate PER. And it's darn near impossible to lock the file once you have a password to open it. Our commitment is to clear up, at no cost to users, any bugs identified in our files.

| Networking and access

Networking: Except for the single-user version, nothing in the files prevents you from sharing PER on more than one computer. But to do this you will need to buy a retail copy of Filemaker Pro for each computer on which you want to use it. The runtime version of Filemaker that comes with PER offers no network support. Filemaker Inc. decides what its runtimes can do.

Layouts: A licence password also gains access to layouts which can be customized with a full version of Filemaker 7 or 8, Windows or Mac. At the time of writing, PER updater files replace any custom layouts. To preserve custom layouts requires a custom update, for which we charge a flat $80. We're busy now abstracting the print layouts to a user table, which will eliminate this cost.

| Support by email – and improving help

Hooped? Something not working properly? A lot of work has gone into the Help file with emphasis on presenting help relevant to what you are actually doing at the time. It's a cliché but true that we fail when you don't succeed. So online help is not done as an afterthought; it's readily available from every working screen.

Yet Help remains problematic. Why? Because the same person who wrote the program wrote the help file. Because he wrote the program he has a hard time remembering what it's like not to know. A classic dilemma for software builders.

Help shotThis is where you come in. You start off not knowing, which makes you expert on when Help works, where it falls short, and how it might be improved.

To encourage improvements you can send a help request or suggestion with a click in the lower left corner of the help window. This will launch and address an email message.

Specific help requests will be handled as quickly as possible. All help comments and suggestions will influence improvements to this file. Really.

You can also use this link as a general suggestion box on PER features you would like to see or areas you feel are confusing and could be improved.
